What “automatic transfer switch” means in plain terms

An automatic transfer switch, usually shortened to ATS, is a device that watches the utility power coming into your home and instantly switches your house over to generator power the moment that utility power fails. When the grid comes back, it switches you back and shuts the generator down. All of it happens without anyone touching anything.

Whole-home vs essential-circuit switches

Transfer switches come in two broad flavors, and which one you get is tied to how much of your house you want to power.

Essential-circuit (subpanel) switch. This type connects a chosen set of circuits, the fridge, some lights, the well pump, a bedroom AC, to a smaller dedicated panel. During an outage the generator powers only those pre-selected circuits. It’s a good fit for a smaller generator and a homeowner who’s fine keeping the basics running rather than the whole house. Everything not on the list stays dark until the grid returns.

Whole-home (service-entrance) switch. This type sits at your main service entrance and can transfer the entire home.
