  • Air-cooled units cover the residential range up to roughly 24 to 26 kW. They cost less, fit most single-family homes in Brandon, Tampa, and the suburbs, and are what the majority of local installs use. Paired with load management, an air-cooled unit powers a whole home surprisingly well.
  • Liquid-cooled units start around 27 kW and climb well past that. The residential standby market comes down to a handful of manufacturers. All of them make reliable units, the differences are at the margins, and local service support often matters more than the badge.

  • Generac. The market leader by a wide margin, which means the widest model range, the most installers who know the platform, and easy parts availability. That installed base is a real advantage for service after a storm. Its air-cooled lineup covers most homes, and its load-management ecosystem is mature.
  • Kohler. A longtime name with a reputation for solid engineering and a strong warranty. Kohler units are well regarded and a common alternative for homeowners who want a premium build.
  • Cummins. Best known for heavy-duty and commercial power, Cummins brings that engine pedigree to home standby units. A reasonable choice, especially at larger sizes, though the residential dealer network is thinner in some areas.
  • Briggs & Stratton. Positioned as a value option in the residential space. Capable units, though its home-standby footprint is smaller than Generac’s or Kohler’s.

The practical takeaway: don’t agonize over the badge. Pick a properly sized unit from a reputable brand that your local installer can actually service quickly, because after a hurricane, the ability to get a tech and a part fast is worth more than a spec-sheet edge.

Fuel narrows the field too

Whether you’re on natural gas or propane affects both which units make sense and their run time. Two local realities shape the choice beyond brand and size.
